Colts 1 had their first win of the season defeating Newcastle 38-0 in an improved performance away from home. An early try to Kyle Johnson from a starter off a lineout was followed up by another try to Elvis Opetaia close to the line after strong lead up work from the pack. An early 14-0 could have been improved on numerous occasions during the first half however, poor last pass, lack of urgency in support and an overall lack of patience and control which has been an issue two weeks in a row gave Newcastle possession time and time again. Credit to the home teams defence as well which never gave up during the entire match and left many of our players battered at the end of 80 minutes.
The Woods scored early in the second half again with slick work inside leading to Regan Harris first of two tries for the afternoon as the backline clicked into action with some long range attack that ultimately saw us in the right end of the field from Tom Watson to cross the line after sustained pressure in attack and Charlie Cale scoring in tradesman like fashion from the back of the scrum. Once again, the second half included many moments that need addressing such as allowing the ball to bounce three times from kicks and turnovers at the breakdown when we were hard on attack, through a casual approach to supporting the ball carrier. It is good to know that we have plenty of improvement to come each week and that we were able to keep Newcastle, with their very aggressive and talented forward pack to zero points.
Colts 2 and Colts 3 played Easts in two non-competition matches (friendlies) and learnt a great deal despite Colts 2 going down 24-46 (no score recorded in Colts 3). Easts have been a benchmark team for the past 6-7 years and won both Colts 2&3 premierships last year so they are a real benchmark. We play them again in round 4 and our boys will certainly be far better prepared by then. It was a good day for both teams and all players will have gained great confidence in being able to score points. Our challenge from here is ensuring our defence is as solid as our attack every week.
