This match could be summed up as one of those matches were the scoreboard doesn’t reflect the effort on the field. Uni got away to a quick 12-0 lead, due to some long range tries against the run of play, but the Woods boys stayed in the fight and dominated with both possession and territory, but a well-disciplined Uni defence seemed to have an answer to everything we threw at them. We went into the half time break feeling confident that if we just stuck to our structure and continued to build pressure with the ball Uni would eventually break.
The 2nd half again was a physical encounter and neither side giving an inch, until a clever chip kick by Jackson Bird, which was regathered by the skipper Max Stewart who drew a defender and passed back to bird who skirted around the full back to score under the post to make the score 12-7. But a common theme this season was our retention of the ball after kick-offs, we kicked it out and from the lineout Uni scored hitting straight back. Some teams would drop their heads at this stage, but not our boys and with the wind at their tails, the lads applied pressure to Uni resulting in a disallowed try to Max Stewart. Again, we could not crack the Uni defence. Uni would score two late tries which didn’t represent a true indication of how tight the contest was, but to their credit Uni deserved the victory and showed our young team what level we need to be at next year to be a threat further into the final’s series.
great season from all the playing group who pulled on a jersey for 2nd grade this season, everybody did it with passion, and a commitment to be better each week and as coaches that is all Briggsy and I could ask for.
